The SGP 1-1 is the first Glider built by the Schweizer
brothers and was designed after the popular German training
gliders of the 1920-1930 period by Ernest Schweizer. It was
constructed over the course of one year by members of the
Mercury Glider Club with $150 which the club raised.
Only a replica of the original glider remains which was
built for the Schweizers by a group of volunteers, led by
Ernest Schweizer, in 1989. The replica was flown by the
brothers prior to being donated to the National Soaring
Museum.
Like the original, it is constructed completely of wood,
with fabric-covered wings, struts and tail surfaces and is
designed to be towed behind an automobile to rise off of the
ground. The SGP 1-1 Primary is the aircraft in which the
three brothers learned to fly and is rumored that some years
went by before the brothers began to initiate turns in the
craft.
From this humble beginning, however, they eventually went
on to design and construct an improved glider, the SGU 1-2
and to form the longest-lived aircraft company in history.
From 1937 until 2004, the Schweizer Aircraft Corporation has
been building a variety of aircraft including a long line of
sailplanes have operated the oldest glider port in the world
near their factory headquarters in Elmyra New York.
The maiden flight of the Schweizer SGP 1-1 took place
June 19th, 1930 when Ernie, Paul A., and William Schweizer
were 18, 17, and 12 years old, respectively.
