The First model 1-26 Standard prototype flew in 1954 and
entered production in 1955. Later a kit version of the
Standard was produced by Schweizer and was designated the A
model. This model was then produced at the factory and
designated the B shown here which was essentially the same
as the Standard and A models.
With the 1-26C, the wings were fully sheeted in aluminum
rather than only back to the drag spar with the ailerons,
rudder and elevator still being covered in fabric as in all
previous and subsequent models.
Several Schweizer 1-26 were delivered to the United State
Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs for flight training
and designated TG-3. Color Scheme was overall Silver with
Red Orange and Air Force Blue trim with roundels with White
Stars and Red Stripes on White flags on either side of the
roundel as was the norm in the 1960s.
All told, 700 1-26 sailplanes were produced by the
Schweizer Aircraft Corp. making it the most popular and
numerous sailplane in the world.

Two beautiful examples of
the 60" 1-26B built by its designer Charlie Nemake
show his excellent attention to detail.
The B model retains the look of the original
1954 one-design by Ernest Schweizer in the
elliptical tail and triangular truss aft fuselage
sections and is our most popular model for good
reason. To begin, it is drop-dead cute with its 50s
heritage and accuracy to full scale. Second is its
simple design like its namesake and third its quick
to build with intermediate skills, and finally, it
is both easy and fun to fly.
It can be highstarted with a mini histart
consisting of 30 feet (10m) of 3/16" OD rubber
tubing and about 60 -70 feet of line. It is capable
of thermal flight when built light but really
excels in light to moderate lift on the slope.
It has been given excellent flight reviews by
all who have built and flown it and at an all-up
weight of only 20-23 oz. is able to fly very slow
and thermal yet without the addition of any ballast
can fly fast and aerobatic in up to 20+ m.p.h.
conditions on the slope. Truly amazing and a
testament to the Selig 3021 airfoil and the
planform, chord and aspect of the 1-26 wing which
allows this kind of performance at small scale.
We do recommend spring steel joiner for slope
flying and the addition of carbon strips or tow to
the outer surfaces of the spar caps. In this
application, hard balsa may be substituted for the
plan-specified spruce caps to make sanding the
laminated caps to match the existing laser cut spar
slots in the ribs a snap.

SGS 1-26B Steve Moskal designed quarter scale

A beautiful example of the
Moskal 1-26 by Charlie built for his son Jason
(note the N number) and to the left, the orginal
and prototype completely refinshed in '05 by Steve
Moskal and below those, two great examples by Earl
Mosley.
This is the quarter scale 1-26 that you have
been seeing for years at your local glider club
field and originally published in Model Aviation
magazine with the beautiful cover photo. A great
flyer that can thermal with the best of the scale
ships due to its large area and wide chord. On a
good day, it is not uncommon to have flights of an
hour or more and with its robust design and large
scale, this is a great woodie subject for
aerotowing.
